Indiepreneur

So, I've finally figured out what the heck I'm trying to do.
And that is be an indiepreneur:

Indiepreneur: noun A small business owner who eschews corporate institutions in favor of business principles influence by craft production and do-it-yourself ideology.

According to wikipedia it is in the category of a very small business:

Very Small Businesses (VSB) refers to companies that are at the lower end, in terms of size, to companies that are considered Small and medium enterprise. The actual definition of what size companies classify as VSBs varies from region to region, but upper limit is usually considered to be 25 to 50 employees. Some additional terms used for businesses on the 1-5 employee level of the "smallest of small business" population: microbusiness, minibusiness, nanobusiness, home-based business, single-proprietor business, minipreneur, micropreneur, mompreneur, homepreneur, indiepreneur, small-production business, hobbypreneur, and Verysmall Business.

I think this is a relatively new concept, being an outgrowth of the punk / DIY ethic which doesn't really get much coverage in traditional business literature. I mean, whenever you read business books, they tend to talk about larger corporate institutions and the concepts sort of, but didn't really apply to what I was trying to do.

Similarly, there are books about being a freelancer, but that's not really what I want to do either. The concepts of small business apply, though it seems like small businesses are aimed specifically toward finding a market niche and filling that niche.

So, think indie music, indie comics, indie film, indie video games. There is more of an expressive artistic focus as opposed to a market driven approach.
